Carmen Grier’s hand-dyed and pieced fabric compositions are inspired by her memories of the Iowa landscapes of her childhood as well as the lushness of rural Western North Carolina, which she now calls home. Her work reflects her passion for gardening as well as her reflective observation of song and garden birds.
Carmen’s Grier’s work begins as white fabric. Through a series of dyeing and printing processes, she adds and subtracts layers of color and pattern in order to alter and transform the cloth. Carmen then cuts and painstakingly sews the cloth pieces into what she regards as “little poems” that reveal themselves over time.
Carmen Grier’s work has been featured in national publications including Fiberarts and Surface Design Journal. From 1994 to 1997 she had the honor of being Artist-in- Residence at Penland School of Crafts. In 2004, a piece of her work entitled “Stem” was added to the Permanent Collection of the Mint Museum of Craft + Design, Charlotte, NC. In 2005, Carmen received a Silver Award at the prestigious Smithsonian Craft Show in Washington, DC.
